Investing in mobility equipment can be life-changing—but also financially overwhelming. Fortunately, if you live in Ontario, you may qualify for ADP funding through the Ontario Assistive Devices Program, which can significantly reduce the cost of essential medical equipment and mobility aids.

At Universal Health Products, we work with clients across Ontario to ensure they don’t just get the equipment they need—they also get the funding support they deserve. In this guide, we’ll explain how ADP funding works, what’s covered, who’s eligible, and exactly how UHP helps make the process easy and stress-free.

What Is ADP Funding?

The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) is a government initiative offered by the Ministry of Health in Ontario. Its purpose is to help residents with long-term physical disabilities get the equipment they need to live independently and improve their quality of life.

Through ADP funding, eligible Ontarians can receive up to 100% coverage of the cost for approved assistive devices—sometimes more, depending on additional financial support programs.

What Equipment Is Covered?

The Ontario assistive devices program covers a wide range of mobility and medical equipment. At Universal Health Products, we focus on the categories most commonly needed by our clients, including:

  • Manual and power wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Pediatric mobility devices
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Wheelchair cushions and positioning aids
  • Standing frames
  • Specialized seating systems
  • Home accessibility products (select items)

It’s important to note that not all products are automatically covered—only those listed as “ADP-approved” and prescribed by an authorized health professional.

Who Is Eligible for ADP?

To qualify for ADP funding, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Ontario
  • Have a valid Ontario Health Card (OHIP)
  • Have a long-term physical disability (lasting six months or more)
  • Require the device for daily, ongoing use in your home or community

If you’re not sure whether you qualify, don’t worry—UHP is here to help assess your situation and walk you through your options.

How the Application Process Works

Navigating any government program can be confusing, but that’s where we come in. Here’s how Universal Health Products simplifies the Ontario assistive devices program for you:

Step 1: Needs Assessment

We begin by speaking with you (or your caregiver) to understand your unique mobility needs, living environment, and medical history. This helps us identify the right equipment and whether it qualifies for ADP funding.

Step 2: Connect with an Authorizer

To apply for ADP, you must be assessed by an ADP-authorized health professional—typically an occupational therapist or physiotherapist. We work with a trusted network of authorizers across Ontario and will connect you with one near you.

Step 3: Product Selection

Once the authorizer evaluates your needs, they recommend specific ADP-approved products. Our team helps match these recommendations to the best brands and models we carry—always with your comfort and lifestyle in mind.

Step 4: Paperwork & Submission

UHP handles all the necessary documentation, including the application forms, product quotes, and medical notes. We’ll work directly with the authorizer and the ADP office to ensure everything is submitted correctly.

Step 5: Funding Decision & Order

Once approved, ADP covers a portion of the cost. We’ll invoice the program directly and only charge you the remaining balance.

How Long Does ADP Approval Take?

The timeline can vary depending on the complexity of your case and the current processing times, but here’s a general breakdown:

  • Assessment & application: 1–2 weeks
  • ADP review & approval: 4–8 weeks (on average)
  • Equipment delivery: Within 1–2 weeks after approval

Our team stays in close contact with both the ADP office and your healthcare provider to keep things moving quickly and smoothly.

Why Work with Universal Health Products?

As an ADP-supportive provider, Universal Health Products is uniquely equipped to help Ontario residents get the mobility equipment they need—without the stress.

Real Results: A Quick Example

Case Study: Laura, a caregiver from Windsor, came to us needing a pediatric walker for her son with cerebral palsy. We connected her with an ADP-approved occupational therapist, submitted the paperwork on her behalf, and helped her apply for additional coverage through Easter Seals. Her son’s walker was delivered within five weeks—at no cost to the family.
